Tuesday Chit Chat

How much do I love my husband? So much! I'm just back from the gym to find his truck gone (errands) but there is fresh, hot coffee in the carafe and the laundry basket from the closet is in the laundry room. He knows I hate to drag it down the stairs when it's full up. The little things in life, eh?

I worked my leg routine with Lisa spotting me and then I spotted her. It's awesome not to have to watch the clock or count. I can focus on form and breathing and get a rocking work out. I also did running sprints on the treadmill before and after. It's amazing that I'm working out while on vacation. It speaks volumes to the changes I've made. I feel great and I will truly enjoy the pizza tonight (well, maybe, if it's good.)

I'm down nearly 2% of body fat from when I had my initial session with Blake. He measured it at 43% with a hand-held device, which is a higher reading than my scale but as long as the numbers go down I'm not going to quibble. It read 41.3% after my workout this morning and that means I'm building muscle. More muscle means more calories burned at rest, which is win-win! My BMI also came down a tick from 38 to 37.9, which isn't much but when I think about my 50.7 BMI from October I get a little happy.

I'm going to make the juice now (did you buy your juicer yet?) and get a load of laundry on while I enjoy another cuppa. I'm going to relax with my book this afternoon, The Tea Rose by Jennifer Donnelly. It's historical fiction about a cockney girl in 1888 and her saga. It's the perfect book for vacation, thick, absorbing, dreamy. It's got the perfect balance of detail and quick pace, too.

Monday Weigh-In

Happy Monday, everyone! First weekend of our staycation was wonderful. We spent some time with friends, enjoyed some lovely wines and I tried my hand at a real pit master's BBQ rib recipe yesterday. It wasn't an epic fail but it just wasn't "there." I was disappointed because it was an all day affair with lots of mess to deal with. I think I'll just head over to Slope's next time and order a rack so I can enjoy all the taste and none of the clean-up.

I've hit a bit of a plateau, still sitting at 208. I must admit that I love how all the exercise (including doing my usual Monday workout on Sunday) I did last week allowed me another delectable weekend with no Monday gain. After this vacation week I am going to lighten up the foods (heavy on the veggies) and stay off the wine until our Disney Family Reunion, which starts August 29th. I've set myself a goal of getting under 200 before the Disney trip and I know I can do it. But rich food and flowing wine at the weekends isn't the best strategy. I need to step up my training, too. My sister says that I have to be the fast pass runner. ACK! I'm sweaty and out of breath just thinking about it.

We're off out to drop my hubby's new truck to have the bed liner and running boards installed and then to see the Tranformers sequel in IMAX. I hope you all have a fantastic Monday. Stay cool, stay hydrated and enjoy the week.

Remember the Go-Go's?

I woke up singing the song "Vacation" because it's our first official day of vacation. You'll have it stuck in your head all day now, too. We're doing a Disney family reunion in early September so this week is a semi-staycation. We're going to enjoy the house, spend time with friends, take in Transformers on IMAX, go to a few local restaurants I've been dying to try and then travel to Savannah on Thursday to spend the weekend. The fireworks over the river are wonderful, so I'm really looking forward to it.

I was up extra early and what did I do? I dragged my husband out of bed, kicking and screaming and took him on a vigorous 3-mile walk. He'll thank me later. I'm going to keep up with my workout routine because I definitely want to enjoy my restaurants, wine and meals this week. I'll hit the gym Monday as usual, I've got an appointment to train with Lisa on Tuesday morning and I'm seeing Blake on Wednesday. We'll do plenty of walking and swimming in Savannah, but probably not as much walking as last trip because Savannah in summer is scorching.

We're going for pizza on Tuesday evening. I haven't had pizza since December in Boston. Atlanta is a seriously pizza-challenged town. In fact, the whole state of Georgia is devoid of anything with a perfect crust. Varasano's is a new place that is meant to be the savior for all the northern transplants who miss their beloved pies. We shall see.

It may be a bit quiet around here for a week or so, but I'll definitely be here for the weigh-ins and to rave about pizza if it's worth the rave (and calories.) Have a gorgeous and relaxing weekend!

Working Out with a Friend

I'm fresh out of the shower after a session with Blake. He's redeemed himself as an angel of mercy today. He listened to my concerns and worked with me on a great and vigorous lower body workout but that was well within my ability. Oh, it was tough and I will feel it tomorrow but I shouldn't be crippled up like last week's debacle. He's helping me work on balance, which was one of my main concerns. I've been klutzy all my life and the extra weight just exacerbated the fact. I feel energized and happy right now. Hopefully I won't be in too much pain pushing the buggy around Trader Joe's tomorrow.

Yesterday my friend Lisa and I spotted each other with our Blake workouts. It was terrific to have an extra day with a surrogate trainer. She was encouraging, reminded me to breathe and kept me moving. I hope I did the same for her. Even hit her in the butt a couple of times during the plank walk and said "LOWER!" That was fun.

If you hate working out alone or have trouble getting/staying motivated, ask a friend to be your workout partner a couple of days a week. It's great to have a spotter to make sure you're using good form and it's amazing how fast time on the treadmill or a walk flies by when you have someone to chat with.

Meatless Monday and a Tasty Oxymoron

One of my resolutions was to continue eating a more plant based diet (not Diet, you know what I mean.) It started off with Macaroni Monday where I'd make a lovely vegetarian pasta dish every Monday night. But I've recently tried to make Monday (or Tuesday due to my work schedule) totally meatless.

Breakfast is easy, a pre-workout Larabar, juice and my vitamins post-workout and then a fruit parfait shortly after. Dinner is also easy because there are endless varieties of vegetarian pasta dishes out there and I want to try all of them. Last night I boiled Dreamfield's penne rigate with a can of Progresso cannelini beans, drained and tossed with homemade pesto, a bag of fresh baby arugula and freshly cracked black pepper. I topped mine with a few goat cheese crumbles which got all soft and melty with the heat of the dish. It was delightful!

Lunch is where it gets tricky. A salad is not substantial enough unless it's got a pile of meat on top. My sister is a fan of something called a "veggie burger." Which is an oxymoron to this carnivore. I admit to being prejudice against veggie burgers because they're straight up nasty. But of course I haven't eaten once since the Nineties when I tried vegetarianism on for about five minutes. My sister raved about the Dr. Praeger's tex-mex burgers that she got at Trader Joe's so I picked up a box. I also picked up a box of Trader Joe's Vegetable Masala Burgers to try out.

Dr. Praeger's have really good flavor and I like that you can see all the peas and corn throughout. The tex-mex spices are mild but nice. The texture is dreadful in the microwave, better on the stove top but who wants to wash a skillet at lunch time? Not I.

The Masala burgers are OUT OF THIS WORLD! So spicy and flavorful and satisfying. They have double the fat of Dr. Praeger's but also double the flavor. The texture is great even in the microwave and they are made without soy, which is a big bonus for me. Try them grilled on top of a grilled naan bread and you won't think twice that you're eating a veggie burger.

Veggie burgers are nice in a wrap, in a sandwich or just on a bed of greens topped with a bit of cheese and spicy mustard any day of the week. What are your favorite veggie burgers and how do you like them?

Monday Weigh-In

Well kids, it's Monday again. I haven't been so happy to see the end of a week in a long time. Not that last week was all bad, I was treated to a great meal by my friends Donna and Jeff while Rob was away. We went to Holeman and Finch Public House, I'm still dreaming about the pate and those hot-sweet pickled green tomatoes. Thursday morning brunch with my girlfriends was also a highlight. Other than that I felt out of sorts and even a little down on myself feeling like I had eaten too much, had too much wine, that the awful post-workout soreness put a crimp into my regular workouts and that I was going to see some sort of gain on the scale this morning.

Color me relieved that I didn't gain anything. I'm still sitting at 208 pounds and have a fresh new week to keep making good choices, workout effectively and to celebrate my progress. YES, CELEBRATE! Being down on myself solves nothing. I have come so far, met all my closet goals (have been buying up new wardrobe pieces here and there) and have been so much more physically active that I have energy to do more and more. I had a negative feeling week, did a bit of emotional eating but didn't gain anything, this means my strategies are working. This is worth celebrating!

Shutting Down The Autopilot

So I'm sitting on the couch last night and before I even realized it, I had half-empty bag of Veggie Crunchers in front of me. Something switched on the autopilot and I have to admit it was hard to shut it down. When I woke from the fog and realized what I was doing, I was really upset because unconscious eating is one of my biggest issues and I've been having some good successes working on dealing with it. What can I do about it and how can I keep that autopilot disconnected?

Know your triggers!
After I put the bag back in the pantry, I shut the telly and sat down to have a think about what triggered this bout of emotional eating. My husband used to travel so much for work and food was my biggest companion. When he changed jobs, the traveling became much more sporadic. But these past two weeks he's had business trips and I found myself snacking out of loneliness/boredom like I hadn't done in a long time. Last Sunday with the pistachios and last night with the Veggie Crunchers.

I was also stressing about telling Blake (the personal trainer from you know where) that I need him to dial the the leg workouts back because I was just too sore and it felt like a set back. Confrontation is hard but I resolved to call him and let him know where I stand. I did that just now and feel so much lighter because of it.

Eating feelings away does not work. They only stay away for a minute and then what? I still have to deal with them so they don't paralyze my life. Awareness of feelings and dealing with them is half the battle.

Know your trigger foods!
Healthy snack foods can be a problem if the portion gets out of control. I need to move the measuring cup into the pantry near where I keep my nuts and snacks to remind me to measure my portion into a bowl and NOT eat out of the bag. I used to keep huge bags of peanut M n' M's hidden in the couch cushions. Can't go back to that counter-productive behavior.

Have a back up plan!
Feel a snack attack coming on? Do something else. I should have asked myself why I wanted food and thought about it for a moment. What do I really want/need instead of this snack? And then redirected myself away from the pantry. Maybe brushed my teeth or put on a face mask, gone outside to talk to the garden and listen to the sounds of the trees, called my mother (well maybe not), called someone (my husband was on a plane at the time), got my journal out, made a cup of tea, practiced my relaxation technique. You see where I'm going with this.

This was a hard post. Accountability isn't always easy but it's working for me.

Try Something New: Pea Shoots, Purple Asparagus

After purchasing some gorgeous golden beets at Whole Foods last week, I popped in to Trader Joe's to find some inspiration on what to do with them. I picked up some spiced pecans and some goat cheese, of course. In the produce section is where things got interesting. Fat purple asparagus spears caught my eye. Deep purple in color, I had never seen or tasted them before. And then I noticed a tub of something called pea shoots that looked so cute and green, I had to have them. So this mish-mash of ingredients turned into this...

I roasted, peeled and sliced the beets, trimmed and roasted the purple asparagus, dressed the pea shoots with a light, tangy vinaigrette and put the salad together. The purple asparagus turned a greenish-purple when cooked and had a similar but milder flavor than the usual green. The pea shoots tasted a little earthy as a sprout should but much brighter and cleaner. The crisp and juicy snap of them was delightful. The bed of pea shoots was a little more interesting than the usual herb salad or arugula and layered with all those gorgeous ingredients made a fantastic side dish for a bit of grilled sirloin. We cleaned our plates.

The Truth Hurts

And I mean really hurts! If you ever want to find out just exactly how unfit you really are, sign up for a session with a personal trainer. When I woke up in yesterday morning, I could barely walk. And could barely sit down on the toilet and nearly started crying when I had to stand up again. And it didn't get better as the day went on. I'm still extremely sore this morning, I could barely drag the laundry basket down the stairs and I have to food shop later. Thinking about lugging bags up the stairs is daunting. I would not be able to go to work with my legs feeling like this. It would be unsafe for myself and my patients. Good thing I'm not scheduled again until Friday.

I must be nuts because I went back for another session yesterday, this time to work on upper body and abs. I must have pushed myself much harder when I worked on arms/abs these past few months because I'm not nearly as sore from the waist up. I'm pretty proud of that fact. I'm definitely going to have to have Satan, er, Blake dial back the leg workouts a bit so I don't have as much post-workout soreness. I can't be having several days recovery time, it's interfering with my life. The results might be a bit slower but I can't workout today, so it seems counter-intuitive to push myself so hard that I'm missing regular workout days. I'm going to do a bit of gentle yoga this morning to stretch and warm my aching muscles.

Like everything, finding the right balance is key. I need to be pushed a little harder. Being this sore after a workout proves that. But I can't push so hard that it sets me back. Baby steps and maybe a few less ball-squats.

Parfait = Perfect

The mystery of the sweet and delectable fruit has been solved. When I went back to Publix they had another basket full of these beauties but this time with a sign. They are indeed white fleshed nectarines. I bought and devoured four more and I'm wishing I bought a dozen. If you see them in your local market, don't pass them by!

Lately I've been having a parfait for breakfast. Parfait is such a lovely word, so much more fun to say and eat than oatmeal. It makes me think of Donkey in the first Shrek film when he and Shrek are talking about how ogres are like onions because they have layers and Donkey says that parfaits have layers. "Parfaits may be the most delicious thing on the whole damn planet!" He's right.

A breakfast parfait is so simple to make and have infinite flavor combinations. I've been on an organic blueberry kick so I've been focusing on those. I layer blueberries with plain low or non-fat Greek or Icelandic style yogurt, add a dribble of raw, local honey, a sprinkle of spicy cinnamon and raw flax seeds.

A breakfast parfait is very satisfying and loaded with health benefits. Blueberries are loaded with vitamins, antioxidants, fiber and deliciousness. Plain yogurt has protein, calcium, active cultures and is so thick and creamy and luscious. Flax seeds are a great source of fiber, omega fatty acids and have a great crunch. Cinnamon has a whole host of health benefits but the sweet and spicy taste is reason enough for me to sprinkle it around. Raw honey tastes amazing and the benefits, practically endless.

You can use any variety of ripe, summer fruit, add a sprinkle of homemade or good quality store-bought granola or toasted nuts, orange zest, vanilla, nutmeg, pumpkin or apple pie spice, whatever you have on hand, whatever you like. Try making your parfait in a clear glass or bowl so you can see all the pretty layers before you devour them.

How Does Your Garden Grow?

It's growing like stink. The tomato plants are huge and the cucumber plant that was the size of my pinkie when I planted him is now trailing across the deck like draperies. I would highly recommend tomatoes and cukes to newbie gardeners like myself (I'm a third year container gardener) because they are very easy to care for, with some water and some sun they just go. I also talk to my plants, it's very therapeutic but totally optional.

The herbs are doing well, too but the squash and zucchini have proved to be more of a challenge. The summer squash needs much less water, so I'm trying to dry her out. I didn't realize it until I noticed some of the little squashes rotting and falling off. The zucchini had to be repotted and rebounded nicely, but I need bees to come and pollinate him. I have only male flowers and was outside spreading some pollen around the plant with my pinkie this morning. No female flowers means no black beauties.

I have been getting an abundance of squash blossoms and they are a treat. I harvested some yesterday and whipped up a little appetizer.

If you've never had fried squash blossoms, you're in for a treat. Just dip them in egg and in a bit of breadcrumbs mixed with a bit of Parmesan cheese. Fry them in a very thin layer of evoo for about a minute on each side, just until golden. Drain on a paper towel and devour. They are a delicate and wonderful taste sensation. Sorry about the dreadful picture. They tasted far better than they look there.

These are the cukes last weekend, they are even bigger, longer and uncut now. And speaking of dreadful pictures, here's me yesterday with Tow and Mader, the tomato plants. (Yes, I name them, too.)

Monday Weigh-In

It was such a great weekend I didn't want it to end, though I was really looking forward to my training session with Blake. He didn't disappoint. My legs feel more jellied than homemade hog head cheese and I could barely make it up the stairs when I got home. I'm blaming that on the Chair of Death. I'm definitely going to sign up for more sessions because working out like that is so hard but so fun and I can't believe how much I accomplished in such a short time.

Another pound gone, 208 pounds for a total of 69 pounds. There was some great food and wine this weekend, so I'll be putting up some recipes and food porn after I wash up and have lunch with my husband. I hope your weekend was amazing and that your Monday is off to a smooth and healthy start!

Resting Heart Rate

Happy Friday, everyone! I had a fantastic workout today. I feel really good, positive and energized. Which is good because I'm off to work shortly and Monday and Tuesday were the worst days I've had in about 15 years so I'm not looking forward it. I can't say enough about how good exercise makes me feel mentally and emotionally. The feeling of accomplishment that leads to happy feeling that lasts all day, not to mention the really good post-workout high. I'm not going to blow smoke though, it's hard and I get sweaty, smelly and out of breath but a nice shower after the small daily investment and I'm set up for the day.

I'm meeting with a personal trainer on Monday morning. I feel like it's time to start challenging myself a bit more. His name is Blake and he's young and kinda cute with a face full of freckles. He seems to have a good attitude about working hard yet efficiently to make the most of the time. I like that! I'll let you know how it goes.

Now about the title. Do you know your resting heart rate? 68 pounds ago, mine was topping out at 90+ beats per minute, which is very high for someone my age. This meant my heart was working very hard at rest which put me at risk for a heart attack. A high resting heart rate can also lead to excess glucose production, which can lead to insulin resistance. Scary stuff. Since I've taken up exercise and taken some weight off, my resting heart rate is around 71 bpm, which I'm really pleased about and hope to improve that even more as I progress.

Weeknight Food

Fish and vegetables. Could that sound any more boring and diet-y? Well, try this on for size.

Marinated Yellowfin Tuna on the Grill with Summer Veggies

Two yellowfin tuna steaks (frozen ones from Trader Joe's are awesome!)
2 sweet bell peppers
1 large zucchini
1 large summer squash
1/2 large red onion
Trader Ming's Soyaki marinade

Cut veggies into 3-inch strips, cut the onion into thin half moons then place in a zipper bag . Pour in enough marinade to coat well. Place fish into another zipper bag with enough marinade to coat well. Refrigerate both for 1 hour, turning once half way. Remove bags from fridge to get the chill off while you prepare grill. Preheat grill and grill basket on medium-high heat. Be sure to clean and oil grates well so fish won't stick. Cook veggies in grill basket, stirring occasionally for 12 minutes before putting fish on. Place fish over direct heat, cook for 4 minutes with cover closed. Turn and cook another 3-4 minutes with cover closed. Remove fish and veggies to a platter, garnish with some fresh chives. Devour!

Steamed jasmine rice would round out the meal nicely and make it more filling. I never cooked tuna on the grill before and was so surprised at how juicy and flavorful it was. This meal was simple, fast, colorful, delicious and nutritious! If you haven't tried the soyaki marinade from Trader Joe's, you must. It got a great write up in Real Simple magazine, I think it's going to be a staple in my summer grilling pantry. I said veggies a lot in this post.

I'm Going To...

Have you ever used the phrases, "I need to..." or "I have to..." and then never seem to get around to doing what you have or need to? Like clean the toilets or get in that daily workout. I do it all the time and sometimes I get frustrated because my inner child rebels against these thoughts. It's very counterproductive, especially when trying to get healthy and fit (which does take time, work and planning) and balancing it with work, home keeping, bill paying and everything else.

I've decided to try a new tactic. I will attempt to replace the other phrases with "I'm going to..." This might help create a new mindset and keep the motivation up and momentum going.

Monday Weigh-In

Back from the gym, really gave myself the hit parade this morning. I feel better for it, happier and calmer after last night's episode of nervous snacking. I was feeling annoyed and distracted, just not myself and ate way too many salted pistachios in the shell. It was calming but definitely not what I needed and now I'm feeling sodium bloat. Blargh! The scale read 209, so another pound down and 68 total, so that's good.

I just at the most delectable piece of fruit. There was no sign, but I was drawn to the lovely pink blush, I thought it may have been a plum but I think it was actually a nectarine I just ate. It had a white and pale pink, very sweet and creamy flesh. The flavor reminded me of a donut (or saturn) peach, which is one of the most delightful flavors I've ever had on my tongue. I'm going to have to go back to Publix and buy up some more of these tasty gems.

Why Planning Works

I'm back from the gym having completed the 5th day of the five days of exercise I planned. After tonight's shift, I have two days where I can do just what I want to do. I have a bottle of wine to try, a lovely meal planned, a pile of new magazines to read. And I can do this joyfully knowing that I completed my exercise for the week.

When I went back to reread my post about planning it didn't seem conclusive enough, so I want to finish a few thoughts. Why does planning work? For one, it keeps me out of the drive-thru. Where I work is just around the corner from a McDonald's. I used to go there on my supper break just about every shift I worked. I can't even begin to fathom how much fat, salt and chemicals I willingly putting into my body. And despite what McDonald's will have you think, that crap is not (as Alton Brown says) good eats. Now, because I plan my meals, I never leave for work without having my bag of food. I have delicious and nutritious leftovers from meals that I lovingly prepared, or at the very least a healthy, good quality frozen meal. I also have my water jugs and a couple of snacks like carrots, almonds, grapes and sometimes a treat like a Jamfrakas bar. Eating healthy food at work gives me energy to finish my shift and helps me to sleep better. I never slept well after eating a big bag of fast food at 7pm. Talk about heartburn and bloating.

Planning my meals in advance keeps me from unnecessary trips to the market (this is a money and time saver, too) and allows me to control what I put into my body. I have no idea what is coming out of that Chinese or pizza delivery kitchen. I can use the best quality ingredients, control the amount of fat and salt that goes into my food. Planning for snacks makes sure that I'm not hungry and therefore vulnerable to eat something that's not good for my health at the last minute.

Planning might seem boring to some people, but it keeps things interesting in my kitchen. I'm always trying new recipes and finding ways to make healthy tweaks to old favorites.

Regular workouts give me more energy, improve my moods and makes body stronger. It also allows me to eat a bit more and have treats and still find the numbers on the scale going down. Planning my workouts is the difference between thinking I should work out and knowing that I did.

What is the Secret?

Everyone wants to know the secret of losing weight. People pay billions of dollars to doctors, nutritionists, weight loss centers and scam artists trying to find something that works. I'll tell you the secret right here and now and I'll tell you for free. PLAN. That's the secret, planning. In a small block of time you can plan your meals and snacks, make your shopping list, plan your indulgences and plan your exercise for an entire week.

We plan our leisure time, we plan our vacations, we set our DVR to record our favorite shows, we schedule work and appointments and pedicures, so why not take a bit of time and plan out your health goals for the week? Make a week of menus with the shopping list, plan which 3 days you will take a 30 minute walk, plan which days you'll have your favorite cocktail or treat. It may start out taking a bit longer at the beginning but once you get the hang of it, it will take no time at all.

The Internet is an amazing resource for healthy recipes. Click the link and you'll find a Google search that reveals more healthy recipes than one could cook in a lifetime. Save your menus and shopping lists to make future planning even faster and easier. Find recipes you like and double or triple them, left overs of healthy meals make great lunches and can eliminate the need to cook every night. A bit of exercise takes no more than a pair of comfortable walking shoes. Plan your walks for the week and go, you'll wonder why you haven't been doing it all along.

Planning has become second nature to me, it's a strategy that, I promise you, works. I know you've heard me mention this phrase a time or two before, but prior preparation prevents piss poor performance. By making planning a regular habit, you can change your life, change your body, change your future.

Monday Weigh-In

Happy Monday! It was a great weekend, the weather was perfect and we finally got to take advantage of sitting out on the deck. I feel very relaxed this morning. It's so nice out, I would have loved to go for a walk, but I needed to use the weights to off to the gym I went.

210 this morning, 67 pounds total. I don't think I drank enough water this past week. My lips feel a bit dry and I've felt thirsty quite a bit. I usually drink more than enough so that I'm never thirsty and well hydrated. I will have to work on that a bit to make sure I'm getting enough water. It wasn't a great week, work was super stressful but the weekend erased that. I feel energized to get the week off to a great start.

Eat some veggies, get some sun (vitamin D), drink some water and have a beautiful day!
