Back Update: Day Nine

Thank you for all the well-wishes and good thoughts.  I wish I had something more exciting to post so unless you want  juicy details on the first three seasons of Mad Men, it's just a health update.

Wednesday was the worst pain day and I hadn't had much sleep in the previous four nights.  I was a wreck!  I got an emergency appointment with our primary physician because I needed pain medicine.  He prescribed a small amount of pain killers and muscle relaxers which were a godsend, really.  I have been sleeping like a baby.  I've seen the Chiropractor daily and by Thursday evening I felt like a little progress was made.  This morning was the best morning of all, still in pain, but I can actually move around a bit better.  I was able to get in and out of the tub!  You have no idea how wonderful that long hot soak felt.  Just heavenly.

I'm back at the Chiro tomorrow and Tuesday I'm going to try acupuncture for the first time.  I'm excited because I have read so many great reports about pain relief stemming from acupuncture treatments.

If you've ever tried acupuncture, I would love to hear your experiences.

I'm getting fatter by the second.  No movement and stress eating is a bad combination.  I'm trying not to stress about it because stress just exacerbates the back pain.  Hopefully by this time next week I'll be well enough to start my walking again.  Rob is out at the mountain with Tally right now and I wish I could be with them.  The Diabetes walk is just two months away and I will devastated if I can't participate.

Tally has been doing so well, her tummy troubles seem to be well behind us and she's been so sweet to me, it's almost like she senses that I'm not quite myself.

Until next time...send healing vibes my way, be happy, be healthy and always protect your back no matter what you do!

  1. Andra,
I'm happy to discuss acu over email. Do you have questions, or you're just looking for personal experience? I've been going at least once a month for ~3 years.
Also, I'm a Reiki-so I'll send healing Light your way!

  2. Hi Andra,

I've had acupuncture and acupressure before, and have found them to be really helpful for certain things (I went for back pain and also insomnia). It's really relaxing.

I do find the most benefit when I can go for more than one treatment (like chiropractors, they make more progress when you go in regularly) so if you can make a commitment to 1-2x a week, that can be really helpful. You probably won't see dramatic improvement from the first appointment.

I'm glad Tally is feeling better--my pooch used to get terrible tummy ills whenever I'd take her to the dog parks with lakes or rivers. =( They always gave her parasites, it was awful. I hope the worst is behind you, and I hope you continue to feel better.

  3. Do you have a herniated disk? It sounds like that from the time this is taking. Slow and gentle movement will help you the most. The more you move, the better it will heal.

  4. Hello! I'm new to your blog and really appreciate it. I've suffered from back pain for years. Acupuncture, honestly, did nothing for me. The typical "pop and crack" adjustments also did nothing, and PT did help but wasn't a magic bullet. I didn't get any marked relief until (after about 8-9 years of chronic pain) I learned first about NUCCA upper cervical chiropractic (even though my problems were lower-back related, this still was necessary), and then (and this for me was the most helpful) when I learned about IDD (intervertebral decompression device) therapy. NUCCA-practicing chiros can be hard to come by, as can chiros who have the IDD machine. But in any case, if you're not getting the results you want, these are the only options that ever helped me! You could look them up and see what you think. (The majority of both is also covered by my health ins., and acupunct. is NOT--at least for me.)
